Most instances I can think of have values as a reason, which serve the self-image and usually feed the ego, but aren't really selfish.
How do you define it?

Not messy at all, that was an interesting take! After reading that, I think I agree with you that selfishness is not an inherent evil, especially if it is inherent to everything. While I'm here: School started back this week and I just turned in my first piece in Creative Nonfiction. The form is very personal; everyone in the class is going to be close whether we like it or not by Summer, and the nearest things I've written to the material are the memories we traded. I was able to pull a few things from my blurbs to insert into the academic writing, and those are my favorite parts. I thought you deserved some recognition as an inspiration for that. Thank you.
