WEEK 1 In Cheaper by the Dozen, Dad is a very orderly man. “Dad had enough gall to be divided into three parts, and the ability and poise to backstop the front he placed before the world. He'd walk into a factory like the Zeiss works in Germany or the Pierce Arrow plant in this country and announce that he could speed up production by one-fourth. He'd do it too” (1). This is saying that Dad likes to be in control of things. He likes things his way. “Dad was a tall man with a large head, jowls, and a Herbert Hoover collar. He was no longer slim; he had passed the two-hundred-pound mark during his early thirties” This describes him as a rather plump man. Dad likes to be in control and is an overweight man. WEEK 2 Question: Who is telling the story? How can you tell? Why do you think the author chose to tell the story from his/her eyes? The person that is telling the story is one of the children. This can be proved because the child talking will say “dad said...Dad sat up front...mother held the baby.” This shows that this must be the child of the parents. The child talking also talks about her/his siblings. They say things such as “my siblings...my brother…” This also proves that this is one of the children. In conclusion, this shows that the narrator must be a child of the family. WEEK 3 Has the book helped you in any way? Explain. This book has helped me understand how lucky I am to have a family like mine. In the book, the children have many siblings. I only have one sibling. I'm glad I only have one because if I had a lot of siblings then I would feel left out a lot. It also helped me realize how good my parents are. In the book, the father is a very bossy man who yells a lot. The mother mainly keeps to herself and doesn't speak up a lot. In my family, my parents both equally take part in the family and only yell when necessary. The story is very chaotic and I'm glad my family is much more calm. This book has helped me realize new things about my family. Week 4 Reread either the first paragraph of the book or the first paragraph of what you read today. What is in it to make you want to read on? If nothing, why did you continue? The first paragraph of this book did not seem that interesting to me. It said “Dad was a tall man with a large head, jowls, and a Herbert Hoover collar. He was no longer slim; he had passed the two-hundred-pound mark during his early thirties, and left it so far behind that there were times when he had to resort to railway baggage scales to ascertain his displacement. But he carried himself with the self-assurance of a successful gentleman who was proud of his wife proud of his family, and proud of his business accomplishments.” (1) This did not make me very interested in reading the book because it seemed as if there would be nothing interesting happening. All it talks about is the appearance of an older man. This book did not seem very exciting to me at first. Week 5 What did you like learning about the most? Why? I liked learning about what a big family was like. I only have 4 other people in my family (counting my dog) so it was interesting to read. It also made me realize that you never know what you have until it is gone. This is referring to when the father in Cheaper by the Dozen Dies. I thought that that part of the book was a twist that I never expected. I learned a lot from this book and am glad I had the opportunity to read it.
