THEORY UPDATE: i thought of a possible explanation for the shoes. Shoes often symbolize identity. when san is going down the escalator, the camera focuses a lot on his shoes and in the end, he ends up turning around and dashing back up the escalator and prob back to his friends. the shoes also seem worn out and old. when san sees them, his face changes, almost like he’s remembering something in the past, like maybe his past self. i feel like when you move from place to place, you lose a bit of your identity. you have to leave the people you love and the memories you made. maybe by wearing the shoes and turning around, it shows how much San can’t move on with his past. His life changes so quickly but he refuses to leave his past identity behind him. at the same time though, it is still part of his “Resolution”. it’s like a promise to his friends that he’ll be there for them and that he won’t leave them. not again.
